Autumn outdoor games: 5 ideas for a short walk with children

Autumn outdoor games do not require a long hike or a bag of equipment. Start with a short, safe route and one simple idea: noticing a colour, a shape or a change in nature. Adapt these five games to your child's interests. They are invitations to play on a walk, rather than a competition or a compulsory distance target.

Choose a familiar path where you can turn back easily. Explain where you are going and where you can stop. If today's interest extends only to the nearest tree, that can be the whole plan. Wet paths, autumn weather and earlier darkness are reasons to adjust your route, rather than insist on completing an ambitious outing.

1. Find three colours

Choose three colours to notice while walking: a yellow leaf, brown bark and a green bush. You do not have to collect them or race to spot them first. One person might point, another might name them, and someone else can simply look.

For a child who does not want several tasks at once, choose just one colour. Back at home, you can look for it in a picture book too. The game connects a walk with a story without needing a worksheet.

2. Get to know one tree

Pick a tree on a route you regularly use. Notice how it looks today. Are there many leaves? What does the ground beneath it look like? On another walk, see what has changed.

You do not need to know the tree's name to observe it. If you want to identify it, use a reliable guide. The game is about noticing a familiar place, not testing anyone's botanical knowledge.

3. Look for leaf shapes

Look at fallen leaves. Can you see a long shape, a rounded one or an edge with points? Photograph them or draw them when you get home. Follow local rules in protected areas and avoid damaging plants.

For young children, leave out collecting small objects that could be put in mouths. Mushrooms and unfamiliar berries are not tasting activities. Looking is enough, and you can stay on the safe route you agreed on.

4. Plan two stopping points

Before leaving, choose two simple landmarks, such as a bench and a tree. At the first, look around. At the second, decide whether to continue or return. The walk has an understandable shape instead of an unknown ending.

A stop does not need to involve another task. It can be a place to rest or have water. If someone does not want to touch leaves or listen to them crunch, keep the game visual. There is no compulsory sensory experience to complete.

5. Make a tiny story

Choose one detail, such as a leaf on a bench. What if it were an invitation for a storybook character? An adult can start with a sentence. A child might continue, point to the next location or just listen. There is no correct answer and no requirement for a long plot.

Afterwards, explore the TAMITOS characters or the TAMITOS book. This is our editorial suggestion for linking a walk and a story, not a promise of a specific learning outcome. The book discussed is the Slovak edition, with Czech offered as a separate product; this is not an English edition announcement.

Where does TAMITOS Move fit?

If you use TAMITOS Move, you can track a suitable activity using the app's available features. Keep the phone secondary during children's games and choose the route for your family. Our guide for Strava users explains the app's purpose in more detail.

TAMI points are not automatically paid euros. Collecting them does not mean each walk has immediately created a funded donation. Conversion into help depends on a genuinely funded pool and its rules. Avoid promising a child that a particular walk will produce a specific cash payment.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need to play all five games?

No. Choose one and keep the others for another day.

What if a child wants to return early?

Use the safe return plan you agreed on. A shorter walk is not a lost competition.

Do we need an app?

No. All five games work without a phone or a distance measurement.
